Have you Google searched your own name to see how you show up in the search results? This is a good idea. In personal branding, your goal should be to be sure that there are lots of good websites that include your name in a positive light.

Google offers Google Alerts as a tremendously valuable free service that tracks any mentions of your name online. Go to www.google.com/alerts and create an alert for your name, as well as your affiliations such as company name or your book titles.

You can set it up to send you an email as soon as your name appears online or only once a day. Either way, it’s a free service that is vital to keeping track of how you are “showing up” on the Internet. You may get alerts for other people who have the same name as you, but I believe that’s important, too. For example, if someone who shares your name is involved in some kind of scandal, you should be aware of it. There may be people who think that YOU have been involved in the scandal, so you may want to be proactive about clearing up any confusion.

Google Alerts is yet another free offering from Google to help you manage your brand online. I highly recommend you create one for yourself today.
